Laura Mulvey

Who is she?
Laura Mulvey is a British feminist film theorist, she is well known for her essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative cinema, which became a part of a collection of essays which she wrote later on.

What is her field of specialism?
She is a professor of film and media studies, whom creates theories to try and change film.

 What is the Male Gaze?
Laura Mulvey believed that female characters which were casted in Hollywood films in the 1950s and 60s weren’t casted necessarily because of their acting skills but because they were attractive on the screen. She suggests that there are two types of male gazes, one of them is seeing women as ‘whores’ and another is seeing women as ‘Madonna’s’.

Why is it important to media studies?
It’s important to media studies because it changes the way people view film and media aspects. It gives them a different prospective on how women are viewed in media and film texts.

How could it be applied to my product?
Both of the main characters are men, however a women character is shown in the film trailer. This theory is relevant to my product as the women is dressed in high heels with a skirt and top, this could be considered as procative clothing, so i am trying to follow the conventions of the male gaze as opposed to going against them.
